Wadi Rum, Jordan. 8.7.2010

Guests of the Bedouin

We drove to Wadi Rum in the early morning and arrived at the visitors centre. Wadi Rum is an outstanding desert landscape. Sheer- sided mountains of sandstone and granite emerge from open valleys to reach heights of over 1700m. Narrow canyons cut deep into the mountains, often concealing ancient rock drawings. The silence is comforting and our guide Ali is happy to show us the highlights of Wadi Rum. We sip tea with the Bedouin in their tents, visit Khazali Canyon, Lawrence's house and spring, rock bridges and the Seven Pillars of Wisdom ( landmark named after Lawrence of Arabia's book). Later, we picnic in the shade and Ali makes tea on a little fire. It is truly a vast, breathtaking desert. We say our goodbyes to Ali and with red sand in our shoes we depart for Petra to meet up with Marije.
