Romans
We are staying high up in the hills overlooking Jerash at the Olive Branch Resort. It feels to all of us that we are somewhere like Tuscany in Italy in so much as the hilly landscape that surrounds us, the abundance of greenery and flowers, the little Italian-style houses dotted on the hillside, the quiet and the European presence here. It has a very relaxed, no rush, take your time, feeling about the place and that’s just wonderful. The kids love the pool and the little slide. They all make friends easy with the other kids. You can even camp here if you wish.
We headed into Jerash famous due to its abundance of Roman ruins. Known to the Romans as Gerasa, in its heyday it had a population of 15,000. The whole sight is extremely impressive particularly the Cardo Maximus, the city’s main thoroughfare, a colonnaded street which stretches for 800m. It really feels like you are walking in Ancient Rome with the street still paved with the original stones and the ruts worn by thousands of chariots. We also enjoyed and amazing show with Roman soldiers and chariot races- the kids were in their element.
