Dead Sea, Jordan. Tuesday 6.7.2010
We are being pampered in the Dead Sea Movenpick Resort and Spa. The whole complex is simply gorgeous and the kids are in heaven now that they are in the pool! None of the kids particularly liked the beach and the Dead Sea. The high salt content only succeeded in making every cut or sore sting like hell! The adults however had a great time floating on our backs and turning on our bellies. What a strange feeling it was! The Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth and probably one of the hottest. It has such a high level of salinity due to evaporation (9 times higher salinity than other oceans) that only microscopic landforms can survive in it. Additionally, the waters oily minerals are extremely good for your skin. Hence there are many people walking around covered in mud! Again I am sad to inform you that the Dead Sea’s water level has dropped 27m in recent years. The Dead Sea is a terminal lake and the rivers that once flowed into them are drying up due to the impact of population growth, industries and farming activities. Solutions are being considered but the stark reality is that the world famous Dead Sea is drying up.
