Dead Sea Highway- Aqaba. Tuesday 6.7.2010.
Victory
We drove south to Aqaba, a distance of 300km along the Dead Sea Highway. You can see Israel on the other side of the valley and are frequently stopped by police checkpoints along the road. As we reached Aqaba we saw a hive of activity and many ships in the Gulf also from Egypt and Eilat in Israel. This being Jordan’s only sea port, Aqaba is very important to Jordan. Feverish development is also underway in Aqaba as it is being groomed as Jordan’s second city. Lots of new hotels have sprung up in recent years to attract tourists to the area. We are staying at the Barracuda Beach hotel which doesn’t have its own private beach but does has a beautiful view from the balcony of the Gulf of Aqaba. The public beach in front is full of Jordanians pitching their tents. The kids enjoyed the fast slides and pool on the complex and then we headed into town for some junk food and a screen to watch the Holland –Uruguay match. It was a great atmosphere to watch the match on the terrace, there was even a guy from Uruguay! The guys are very happy now with the 3-2 victory and hopefully we will be celebrating a further victory in Jerash on the Sunday 11th of July!
P.s On our phone we keep getting messages from different phone providers, the latest one saying ‘Welcome to Palestine’ that’s how close we are geographically!

Thank you so much for chronicling your journey here for all of us to read. I teach Geography in the US and I will definitely have my students read your blog in class next year. What a great way to learn about the areas you are driving through.
ReplyDeleteI heard about your blog from Jabiz Raisdana on twitter. He was nice enough to Skype with my class last year and to answer many questions my students had about the Doha. What you have said in your posts about the water issues ties right into our study of this region.
Thank you so much for sharing!
Also, you should put a cluster map on your blog so you can see how many people are reading your blog and where they are from!
ReplyDeleteAhhhhhh...Making connections where ever I go. Or in this case where ever you go....
